Ally's Story

The idea of Green Youth Movement started about three years ago, after my freshman year, when I was starting to prepare for my learners permit. As my parents and I were discussing my eventual driving privileges, we discussed the transportation possibilities that might be considered if my license was obtained. I am very fortunate that my family is in a position to purchase a car for me once I received my driver’s license. Now, back to GYM ; I had been studying about the detrimental state of our environment in school and started reading more and more about the pressing issue of global warming. I explained to my mom and dad that when we did get that new car, it had to be a hybrid. I wanted to start making a difference in our family and it was very important to me. I started to do more research on the web about different hybrids, and concurrently, I started learning more about the global warming issue.

Surprisingly, I found myself becoming proactive both at school and at home while doing research on the web as my interests in this subject started to increase. I was starting to become addicted to learning more about all of the air, water, and land pollution that is causing so many environmental problems on this plant. This was an issue I've never really paid that much attention to before deciding on my first car. Since that time, I have spent countless hours learning as much as I can on the subject.

My parents were starting to notice how much time I was putting into learning about hybrids and started to see my sudden change of interest turn into a passion. Over the next few months my common conversations with them went from asking how their day was to asking what kind of light bulbs and heating systems we use in our house and the effect it had on the environment. My parents were so surprised to hear what I had been telling them along with and all the information they actually learned from their then 15 year old daughter. We changed our hot water heating system inside our house to tank-less, and added solar panels on our roof. We started using only reusable grocery bags and stopped using the plastic. Together we came up with the idea to start GYM , an organization started by a youth to educate people about global warming and pressing environmental issues. GYM promotes a thoughtful mindset that values the earth and our future. GYM’s goal is to inform and educate the youth which is the next group of consuming adults. We hope to inspire awareness and give a broad understanding of what it means to “live green”. Over the last three years Green Youth Movement has developed from an idea to a reality, and has already started to make a difference.

The youth is the next generation and we hold the power to bring the change.

We plan to take GYM to a level that will really make a difference.
