Ally Maize Awarded Honor For Green Efforts
By Abbey Hood
Green Youth Movement
founder Ally Maize, 16, is the
recipient of a $1,000 savings
bond after being named “ABC
Cool Kid,” by the Channel 7
station for her efforts to promote
greener lifestyles through
education in local schools.
G Y M
hopes to foster
private
and public
partnerships
and engage
school principals
and
teachers to
incorporate
environmental
educational
curricula
such as
green clubs,
eco-drives,
flyer programs
and
more so students
can get
excited, get
involved and
start behaving
in a more sustainable way.
Fundraising activities are organized
by youth to get youth
involved in peer-to-peer engagement.
“I’m thrilled our outreach
is affecting and influencing
people’s decisions to be more
green conscious,” said Maize,
who plans to use the funds to
continue sharing her message
with schools, businesses and
communities throughout California
and beyond. “I hope
more young people and their
parents will be motivated to use
their voices to protect our environment.”
The Archer School junior
founded GYM a year ago by
first launching her Web site,
greenyouthmovement.org. She
offers tips of reducing carbon
footprints, recommends organic
products, features local ecofriendly
stores and offers information
to adults and children on
“going green.”
Through her Web site,
Maize also sells GYM products
including the “Green Kit” and
“Live Green” bracelets which
raise funds to support the development
of a curriculum for students
focused on environmental
awareness.
She has held events
throughout Beverly Hills to promote
awareness
of GYM at local
boutiques including

BHUSD Lay-Offs Rescinded
By Amanda Peabody
The Beverly Hills Unified
School District Board of Education
unanimously passed to rescind
the lay off notice for one
teacher at a study session meeting
March 26. This negates a lay off
approved previously at the March
6 Board of Education meeting.
With a reshuffling of positions
across all grade levels that includes
the appointment of Carter
Paysinger to vice principal of
Beverly Hills High School, this
move brings the lay off count
down to only .6 of a position.
“I am impressed and pleased
at the speed at which the administration
took a proactive stance to
minimize the pain for the teachers,”
said Chris Bushee, president
of the Beverly Hills Education
Association. “This is a very
good example of what can be
done when parties come together.”
“We do have the money set
aside for this position,” said
boardmember Myra Lurie. The
position will be funded through
the re-appropriation of categorical
funds that will be applied to
teacher’s on special assignment
or TOSA. “I am really delighted
that we can continue this program,”
said Board member Myra
Demeter.
“This is a huge victory for us
as a board and a district office,”
said boardmember Steven Fenton.
“Great teamwork by all.”

Green teens honor Al Gore

Green teens present former vice president with 'inspiration award' for his work motivating the next generation of environmentalists.

Al Gore's commitment to spreading environmental awareness has inspired millions of people to rethink how their individual actions impact the planet. For 17-year-old Ally Maize, Los Angeles' resident "green" teen and founder of local nonprofit Green Youth Movement (GYM), this was no exception. After watching An Inconvenient Truth at the age of 15, Maize was inspired to promote green living and sustainable education among her peers, and has grown the Green Youth Movement into a formidable force in the community.

To thank the former vice president for inspiring the Green Youth Movement, Maize and her fellow green teens presented Gore with The Green Youth Movement Inspiration Award 2009 a few weeks ago at the Saban Theater in Los Angeles.

"Living sustainably is something that many children and teenagers are motivated to do, but the sources for education are lacking," said Maize. "Making a positive impact on the environment becomes much more do-able when the solutions make sense and are readily accessible, a credo that Mr. Gore has worked tirelessly to advocate through his work. The Green Youth Movement's Inspiration Award is a representation of our gratitude for Mr. Gore's role in spreading awareness."

One of the goals of the Green Youth Movement is to garner the support of politicians and educators to create a practical environmental course of study that would ultimately be integrated in every elementary school education curriculum across the nation. Fifteen-year-old Chloe Mills, vice president of the Green Youth Movement put it best: "The basis of our work is to encourage individual accountability amongst our peers by providing them with meaningful and practical methods of conserving." She added, "This is a cause that we're very passionate about, and I hope Mr. Gore knows how appreciative we are of his advocacy efforts. It is truly inspirational."

Why Should Teens Go Green?

An Interview With Ally Maize from the Green Youth Movement

By , About.com Guide

One quick way to go green: just say no to plastic bags.

Ally Maize founded the Green Youth Movement, an organization that educates kids and teens about green living, when she was 15 years old. She stopped by Teen Advice to explain why you, as a teen, should care about saving the environment, and what you can do to get involved.

Teens have so much stress in their lives, between school, their families and their friends.  Why do you want them to start caring about the environment, too?
I know that sometimes life can seem too busy to worry about the environment, but that’s exactly why I started Green Youth Movement. I want to make it easy for kids and teens to live green, and I believe small changes can make a big difference for the earth.  By educating teens on these easy ways to contribute, I can help them incorporate green living methods into their busy lives.  No one is too busy to care about our future, especially when there are simple ways to make a difference. After all, today’s teens are inheriting the earth, we need to create change now.

What are some easy things that teens can do that can make a difference?
There are so many simple things teens can do to help. We can walk or ride a bike to school instead of driving, use reusable bottles and shopping bags, help our families recycle, switch to fluorescent light bulbs, use less energy by turning off devices at home, take a bath instead of a shower, plant trees, and most importantly, spread the word!

Most teens don’t make big decisions about the household, like what food to buy or how much heating or air conditioning to use.  What would you say to teens who want to get their families to be more green?
At home, it’s not always easy to be totally green when your family isn’t on the same page. However, there are several little ways teens can contribute, and hopefully gain their parents support in the future. Teens can start recycling at home and offer to take care of the trash. The next time you notice a light bulb that needs to be changed, ask to replace it with a fluorescent one -- they last 10 times longer!  Teens can also give eco-friendly gifts like reusable water bottles to promote a green lifestyle within their family. Once your parents see how easy it is to make green changes, they will support you and your cause.

What about at school?  A lot of schools don’t have recycling programs.  What’s a teen to do?
My dream is to one day see an environmental course of study integrated in schools across the nation, in addition to implementing recycling programs that make it easy for kids and teach them green living habits. Though we are not there yet, the Green Youth Movement is making a lot of progress in schools. I encourage everyone to take the initiative to start a recycling program at any school that lacks one. Ask your administration if you can have recycling bins on campus, and start a group or club that can help. A few small changes can make a huge difference.

If you want to learn more about Ally and her cause, stop by the Green Youth Movement's website!

Ally Maize and Fellow Green Teens Thank Former Vice President for Spreading Environmental Awareness

Los Angeles, CA - November 16, 2009 - Former Vice President Al Gore's commitment to spreading environmental awareness has inspired millions of people to rethink how their individual actions impact the planet. Chloe Mills, Ally Maize, and fellow GYM members hold the Green Youth Movement Inspiration Award 2009

As a local nonprofit organization that aims to educate teens about environmental awareness and sustainability, the Green Youth Movement believes in daily changes that can make a significant impact, a message that Mr. Gore conveys in "An Inconvenient Truth" and his new book, "Our Choice: How We Can Solve the Climate Crisis." Additionally, the Green Youth Movement considers children and teens, the next group of consuming adults, as an integral part of the solution to climate change.

"Living sustainably is something that many children and teenagers are motivated to do, but the sources for education are lacking," says Maize.

In addition to providing simple, easy-to-do green living solutions on their official website, Maize and her fellow Green Youth Movement members hope to garner the support of politicians and educators to create a practical environmental course of study that would ultimately be integrated in every elementary school education curriculum across the nation.

"The basis of our work is to encourage individual accountability amongst our peers by providing them with meaningful and practical methods of conserving," adds 15-year-old Chloe Mills, Vice President of the Green Youth Movement. "This is a cause that we're very passionate about, and I hope Mr. Gore knows how appreciative we are of his advocacy efforts. It is truly inspirational. "
